Cosmoaudiciones proposes a sonic dialogue between the Berlin Phonogramm Archiv and Museo Experimental El Eco.

In this edition, a program of listening is presented to reflect on and experiment with ways to expand the archive beyond its role as a repository, integrating it into the architectural space of the museum.
Additionally, the project integrates into the Pabellón Eco, activating the museum space through sound performances and musical lectures, as outcomes of the working sessions developed throughout the program.

His work explores the intersections of art and territory, with a focus on aural dimensions within a situated audiovisual practice. Working across cinema and sonic interventions in public space, Buenrostro has presented his work at the Biennale Architettura di Venezia, the Bauhaus Museum, the Musée National de la RD Congo, Konsthall C (Stockholm), and Museo Casa Lago (CDMX). His films have been featured in international film festivals, exhibitions, and public screenings. Through his ongoing project Cosmoaudiciones, he engages with historical sound archives as spaces of critical listening, seeking to re-socialize and re-circulate music from ethnographic collections. The project invites musicians and artists from diverse trajectories to reflect on the migratory pathways of rhythm—its entanglement with memory, displacement, and relational knowledge rooted in listening.</description>

	Cosmoaudiciones is an artistic &#38;nbsp;research project by artist Miguel Buenrostro that explores the relationship between the Berlin Phonogramm Archiv’s sound archive and the rhythms and music that traveled from the Atlantic to the Caribbean and the Americas. The project is inspired by the idea of cosmoaudición, proposed by linguist Carlos Lenkersdorf, which suggests a way of experiencing the world from a position of listening.

Cosmoaudiciones initially emerged as a proposal to question the major German ethnographic collections, exploring ways to rethink current approaches to the repatriation and restitution of objects to former German colonies in Africa, and taking a step toward imagining the possibility of sonic restitution, starting from these sound collections. The research offers a critical reflection on sonic extraction—the act of capturing music and voices to be collected in the Royal Museum of Ethnology.

As part of the program’s activities, the project proposes going beyond material restitution toward a form of re-socializing memory, meaning, and rhythm. Musicians from diverse communities are invited to take part in a program of listening sessions, improvisational concerts, and musical lectures.
In our collective listening, we understand the sound archive as a space of imagination and experimentation—listening to soundscapes, oral histories, rhythms, and harmonies from various recordings, recognizing sound routes and the trajectories of multiple migrations. From an ethics of listening, we question Western categories of so-called “world music” and the essentialist perspectives on regionalisms that XIX century comparative ethnomusicology once used to define the “origins” of music.
On re-socializing musical worlds

How can we restore time from the extracted worlds of meaning?

How can we ‘sound’ the archive with dignity?

How can we re-socialize that which remains absent from the archive?

How can listening practices move us towards re-futuring musical world?
In 2025, &#38;nbsp;the artist Miguel Buenrostro has invited participants&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;Laura Robles, Kunt Vargas, Sofia Escamilla, Fernando Vigueras, Rolando Hernández to reflect on selected materials from the Berlin Phonogramm Archiv which will take part in Mexico City at the Museo Experimental el Eco.&#38;nbsp;
Design by Guido Flichman
Cosmoaudiciones is a project funded by 99 Questions program, curated by Michael Dieminger and was previously supported by the Berlin Senate for Culture in 2022.

The Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv was established in 1900 by psychologist Carl Stumpf in order to collect and preserve the phonographic recordings of non-European music. The recordings served as the primary research material for what we understand today as comparative musicology or ethnomusicology. The main premise of this discipline was to “collect as many examples of traditional music as possible, in order to create and follow theories about the origin and evolution of music.”

The archive was part of a German colonial apparatus in which travelers, ethnologists or colonial officers brought recordings of music and voices to the Berlin Ethnological Museum. Between 1893 and 1954, a large number of recordings were generated in German colonies and beyond. These sonic documents have contributed to a preservation of colonial structures of power and knowledge.

Cosmoaudiciones is motivated by working with materials from the Berlin Phonogram Archive, in order to release the broader worlds of meaning into the public and re-performed by the Sonic Diaspora. Questioning the politics of archiving and the sonic extraction embeded within the collection.

The project hopes to ignite participatory listening practices, discussions around the topic of restitution, return of intangible heritage and the ethics of listening to sound recordings from a colonial context.

	The Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos (ECOIN) was founded thirty years ago in order to introduce the traditional instruments of the Bolivian Andes to contemporary music. Since then, the orchestra has appeared at festivals around the world performing works by contemporary composers written specially for these instruments. Already an impressive sight due to the shape and arrangement of the instruments, the ensemble present a world of sound redolent of the forces of nature, of wind, sun and water. Numerous leading contemporary composers have been fascinated by the possibilities of these instruments and written for the ensemble, which can seem so contemporary precisely because of their roots in tradition.
